Connecting New Orleans
"New Orleans has the right idea. To help get everyone communicating again, the ravaged city is starting up the country’s first municipally-owned wireless Internet system that will, thankfully, be free for everyone. Obviously a great perk for those living and trying to come back to their homes in the city, the hope is that this system will make business more attractive and, of course, help city government officials. Most of the equipment being used was donated, but New Orleans will own and operate it all themselves. Wireless devices will be mounted on streetlights and should be operational in the central business district today." Should internet be free for everybody? No, I don't think so. Telephone service isn't free.

Oh no, the internet should not be free, we must support our conglomerates. If the internet is free we might get the wrong kind of people using it, and who knows where that will lead us.

New Orleans is NOT the first city to do this. Alexandria, VA has had this for some time now. Granted, the New Orleans project is much larger, but to try to say they're first is inaccurate.

As a former New Orleanian, I think free wireless is a great idea for such a great city. Hell, it almost makes me want to pack up and move back. And yes, I think the internet should be free for everyone. I live in the San Francisco Bay area now and the City is actually working on doing the same thing. Unfortunately, I live in Berekely so I wouldn't benefit much from free wireless on the Peninsula.

The internet should be free to school children and those at University and to all those over the age of 60 years. But more advertising should be allowed on the internet to make up any financial shortfall. As borders are opened up and less censorship is being committed live gets easier and those less fortunate than the west would also be getting subsidised internet connection with perhaps a whole area paying an agreed amount per annum and those less well off having the internet for free. Yes, free for all for sure; and broadband wireless everywhere. It's great to be able to get instant response at any time, so that if a question passes through your mind you don't hesitate to type it in and find out. Like having our brains fed by this global server.
It's good to read something positive that's happening about New Orleans.
